During the month of May, states will be looking to boost interest and participation in their 529 savings programs with various sweepstakes, contests and incentives.
We have compiled the following list of state/plan promotions taking place in and around the month of May:
Upromise will award five families a $529 college scholarship in May. Winners will be randomly picked at the end of the month and the selected Upromise members will receive $529 in their Upromise account to help them save for college. Celebrate the future with the AZ529 Education Savings Program 2021 Essay Writing Contest hosted by Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee. CollegeChoice 529 Savings Plans presents their second annual Faces of 529 Day Contest! Upload a picture of who you’re saving for and complete our online entry form for a chance to win a $529 CollegeChoice 529 account contribution. State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald is celebrating 529 Day throughout May by sponsoring a contest to give away 100 College Savings Iowa contributions. One entrant in each of Iowa’s 99 counties will win a $529 contribution, and one person will win a grand prize of a $1,529 contribution. Interested families can visit Iowa529Contest.com to enter for a chance to win. All residents of Iowa with a child or grandchild under 18 years old are eligible.
Maryland 529 and the Port Discovery Children’s Museum are partnering to offer one lucky child $529 towards a new or existing Maryland College Investment Plan account plus a Family Membership to the Port Discovery Children’s Museum. It’s simple and fun! Deadline to enter is 11:59 p.m. ET on May 31, 2021. One entry per person. No purchase necessary to win.
Through the BabySteps Savings Plan, every child born or adopted after 1/1/20 who is a Massachusetts resident will receive $50 into his or her 529 college savings account. More info
MEFA will host dedicated events focused on promoting the benefits of 529 and 529 ABLE plans throughout the week on May 24, 2021 including a Twitter Chat, a Facebook Live, and live webinars in English and Spanish. More info

MNSAVES Minnesota 529 College Savings Plan is celebrating 529 Day with a $50 match for new accounts opened May 24 – May 31, 2021 with a $50 initial deposit and recurring contributions of $25 for 6 months or more. Go to mnsaves.org/529Day for all the details.
The NC 529 Plan is giving away $1,529 to one lucky winner in the “Spring into Saving!” 5/29 Day Drawing. Participants receive entries for each contribution to their NC 529 Account during the month of May, and receive double entries for new accounts and for initiating a new (or increasing an existing) recurring contribution.
In 2021 four CBS affiliate television stations covering 70% of the state of North Dakota will work in partnership with College SAVE, North Dakota’s 529 plan to promote a 529 Day contest from May 7 – 28.
Five $529 College SAVE accounts will be given away and winners announced during multiple newscasts. Nearly $50,000 of in-kind advertising on the television stations will help promote 529 Day. Families will also be informed throughout the state in social media and electronic platforms and driven to the contest webpage to register and learn more about College SAVE.
Last year over 1,500 people requested additional information regarding college savings, college planning information, scholarships, student loans and student loan refinancing.

Parents with babies born in South Carolina on May 29, 2021 are eligible to receive a privately funded $529 PalmettoBaby grant for their child’s future education when they open a Future Scholar account. The application deadline to be eligible to receive those grant funds is August 31, 2021. Parents and family members can visit FutureScholar.com to open an account, download the PalmettoBaby grant form and start their child on a path to saving for college.
Utah residents may be eligible for up to a $40 match if they open a my529 account for a beneficiary who is new to my529 between May 1 – 31, 2021. To qualify, contribute at least $25 at opening, and set up a monthly automatic contribution for at least six consecutive months. More details at my529.org.
Virginia is giving away three $10,000 contributions to new Invest529 accounts opened with at least $25 by June 1, 2021. Webinars on a variety of topics, including alternative uses for 529 plans, will be conducted throughout the month as part of the Smart Savers Academy webinar series. WA529 is celebrating National 529 Day with a Hide-and-Seek, Look for Books with Hootie Promotion. Hootie the owl hid 5-9 children’s books on our webpages – Can you find them all?
